GERMANIA AD 69/70
After the death of Nero, the Roman Empire suffered from political instability and civil war. Julius Civilis, a Batavian chieftain and former officer of the Roman Army, took advantage of the situation and raised a revolt. Initially, the rebels were successful. They routed the Roman military and proclaimed the independence of the Gallo-Germanic provinces. When Vespasian emerged as the new emperor, he dispatched a war machine of eight legions under Petilius Cerialis to crush the rebellion.
